The Disappearing Double

The restaurant looked busy when the boys got there. There were almost no places left in the parking lot. Jack and Billy chained their motorbikes to a pole across the street, then walked over.

When they walked inside, the place was nearly full. Waiters hurried to deliver food and refill drinks. A few diners were yelling for their food. Jack, Billy and Sam walked to the front desk.

The clerk brought them to a small table towards the back of the restaurant. The boys sat down, and ordered their drinks. The clerk handed them three menus, then rushed back to the front desk.

“I wonder where Larson is,” Jack said.

He looked around. To the right of them were several people at a table next to the wall. Behind him were an elderly couple, and in front was an adult sitting by himself. He was a tall and handsome man, with black hair and wore a three-piece suit.

Billy scanned his menu. “I’m interested in their organic vegetarian steak selection.” he said to the others.

“Those are pretty expensive,” Jack replied.

“Besides, we’re just here to try to find Larson,” Sam said.

Jack looked back over at the well-dressed man. He was tapping the table. Every now and then he looked at his watch. Jack looked at his own watch. It was 6:34 P.M.

The waiter came to their table with drinks, and asked for their orders. Billy ordered the steak he wanted, along with a side of salad. Sam ordered a medium-rare steak, with a side of mashed potatoes and asparagus.

“Hey, Sam, could you lend me 50 bucks?” Jack asked.

“No way,” Sam replied. “I already gave Billy some money, and I’m almost broke.”

Since Jack didn’t have enough pocket money, he had to order from the kids menu, to his disappointment. He decided to order ribs, with green beans and mac and cheese for his side dish.

The waiter jotted down the boys’ orders and quickly rushed to another table. Jack looked back over at the man in front of them. He was on his phone. When the waiter came to his table and asked what he wanted, he said he was leaving. The man quickly stuffed his phone in his pocket, and quickly walked toward the exit.

Jack got up from the table. “We need to follow that man,” he said to Billy and Sam.

“Why?” Sam looked over and saw the man going to the exit.

“Because he looked a little suspicious.”

Sam watched the man open the door. “Doesn’t he look like Freddy Larson?”

“Exactly.”

“But we just ordered,” Billy protested. “It wouldn’t be right if the chefs prepared our meals, and then after finding out that we left, threw it in the trash. It’s a waste of inventory.”

But Jack didn’t listen. He ran to the door with Sam. Billy followed reluctantly. When they got out, they saw the man pull out of his parking spot, and approach the driveway.

“Sam, get his license plate!” Jack was afraid they would lose him for good without it.

Sam whipped out his phone, pressed a few buttons, and snapped a photo of the license number. The car turned onto the street, and drove away. Sam looked at his phone.

“Aw, man,” he groaned, “I couldn’t catch the number. It was too dark.”
